The area of Clerkenwell is a buzzing and modern fusion of rich history and vibrant culture located in London’s central Zone 1.
Once known as the ‘Little Italy’ of London, reminders of this still exist, with traditional food outlets dotted around the area. However, the choice for a keen diner is by no means limited to this, as Clerkenwell is home to many of London’s finest restaurants.
Clerkenwell is also filled with many Art Galleries and Museums, such as the Barbican Art Gallery and Museum of London. The River Thames and St Pauls Cathedral are also less than one mile away, making our Clerkenwell apartments an easy choice for your stay in London.
Eating Out:
Clerkenwell provides a wide array of options for eating out. Whether you’re after a hot drink and something to treat your sweet tooth at any of the many cosy cafes or maybe something a little finer like a meal at St John Restaurant, recipient of a Michelin star in 2009, Clerkenwell has all your options covered.

If you’re coming to London seeking retail therapy, Clerkenwell will have you once again spoilt for choice. Here, keen shoppers can find anything from antique collectables and works of art, to designer furniture. Exmouth Market is a fine example, which is just a stone’s throw away from our Clerkenwell apartments.
Also within close proximity is Smithfield Market, where produce such as meat and poultry have been traded for over 800 years. More recently, cheeses, pies and other delicatessen goods have also been sold at Smithfield Market, making this the perfect destination to pick up your Sunday Roast.
Oxford St and London’s famous West End shopping is also a short trip away.

In addition to the lively bar and restaurant scene, Clerkenwell is a central hub of London entertainment.
Clerkenwell is home to Fabric nightclub, one of London's premier nightclub and dance music venues. But if theatre is more your style, you'll be spoilt for choice at Sadler's Wells Theatre, or the nearby Old Lion Red Theatre, which plays host to some of Britain's most exciting theatrical talent.
Perhaps you'd like to browse around one of London's most traditional and liveliest street markets, Chapel Market, which is in the surrounding neighbourhood of Islington. A little further south you can find St Paul's Cathedral, one of England's most regarded architectural and religious monuments; continue down to the River Thames, and then just over the bridge you'll find Southbank, home to lively street performers and the London Eye.
Also, just a short trip away is London’s world famous West End.
Clerkenwell and the surrounding area abounds in fascinating historical buildings and landmarks and you can be driven around to most in an open-top double decker bus tour, complete with informative commentary. Alternatively if you prefer, you can simply stroll around seeing the sights. There are a number of companies offering either traditional guided walking tours or you could opt for an MP3 tour to guide you around at your own pace.
There are always seasonal events taking place here in London, from the festive markets and ice-skating rinks in Winter and sporting events held at some of our terrific venues, to shows and processions such as the Notting Hill Carnival that inject the city with tremendous energy and colour.

If using public transport in the area (buses and tube), you may wish to purchase an Oyster Card. Available from many newsagents in the area as well as tube stations, this card allows you to either pre-purchase a fixed amount of ‘credit’ for individual trips, or a travel card (daily, weekly, monthly as required) which then allows unlimited travel for the given period.
The closest Tube station to our Clerkenwell apartments is Farringdon, which is approximately 0.3 miles away and also operates some mainline routes. Barbican, Kings Cross St Pancras, Angel, Chancery Lane, Holborn and Russell Square stations are also within one mile of our Clerkenwell apartments. Tube maps are available at all stations.
There are also many bus routes in the area if you prefer to travel at street level and some would say that no trip to London is complete without a ride on the quintessentially English double decker buses.
Alternatively, if you prefer, you can just hop in a taxi. You will see London’s iconic black cabs buzzing all around the city and you can either hail one in the street, from a taxi rank or telephone to book one in advance.
Finally, some transport maps can make areas that are really quite close to one another look far apart, so consider buying a street map to wander around London on foot. Websites such as Google Maps can help direct you from one place to another if you have a particular destination in mind and it is most likely you will happen upon some interesting places along the way!
The official Transport for London website contains lots of useful information and it is always worth checking this website when possible as it can help when planning your journey and inform you of any delays you may encounter:-
